What is CLAT?

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized national level entrance exam in India for admissions to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs at 22 National Law Universities (NLUs). Additionally, the test is used by several affiliate colleges and universities for their law programs. Over the years, CLAT has evolved into one of the most sought-after and competitive exams in India for aspiring law students. The exam is conducted only ONCE every year.

CLAT was introduced in 2008 as a response to the increasing demand for a common entrance test for admission to various NLUs, each of which previously conducted its own entrance exam. This multiplicity of tests created logistical and financial burdens on students. The first CLAT was conducted by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, and the responsibility of conducting the exam rotates annually among the NLUs based on their year of establishment.

CLAT 2025 Exam Date

Recently, the Consortium of NLUs issued a press release stating that CLAT for the session of 2025-26 will conducted on Sunday, 1st December 2024. The timing stated is 2PM to 4PM. Read the full  press release here.
