The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the largest distance education universities in the world, offering a diverse range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate courses. With a mission to promote accessible and flexible education, IGNOU emphasizes the importance of continuous assessment through assignments. These assignments form an essential part of the overall evaluation and are designed to assess the student’s understanding and engagement with the course material. In this comprehensive overview, we will explore IGNOU assignment modes available and their importance in the overall academic structure.
Given the diverse nature of IGNOU’s student base, spread across various regions of India and abroad, the university offers multiple modes for submission of assignments. These assignment modes cater to the specific requirements and logistical challenges of students across various Regional Centres (RCs).
In recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, IGNOU has transitioned to accepting assignments through online submission for many courses. The online mode was developed to ensure continuity of education and to make the process of submitting assignments more convenient for students.
Despite its convenience, online submission requires students to be meticulous with deadlines and technical aspects like file formats and proper labeling of assignments.
Despite the growing popularity of online submissions, many IGNOU students still prefer or are required to submit their assignments in physical form. This mode is particularly common for students in regions where online infrastructure is less developed or for certain practical-oriented courses where physical submission is preferred.
Some Regional Centres have adopted a hybrid approach, allowing students to choose between online and physical submission based on their convenience and resources. This mode was particularly useful during the pandemic, as it gave students the flexibility to switch modes as per their circumstances.
For students living in extremely remote areas with limited or no internet access, IGNOU provides the option to submit assignments by post. Though this mode is less common now due to improvements in digital infrastructure, it is still available in certain regions.
Below are the modes of assignment submission as instructed by Regional Centres along with their Submission Links and Address. We will be uploading more in the coming days.
