Admissions for DU SOL Academic Session of 2024 have been closed now. Check out Merit List for all courses here.
In a major academic development, Delhi University (DU) has announced that students can now pursue one distance education degree alongside their regular degree course. This new policy provides greater flexibility and opens doors for students to acquire dual qualifications without compromising the rigor of their primary academic pursuit. The decision is expected to enhance the educational opportunities for students, allowing them to diversify their skills and knowledge base.
The University recently put out a notification on the website offering to earn another degree simultaneously from the Delhi University School of Open Learning (DU SOL) along with their regular degrees. In order to encourage so, the University is also offering a rebate of Rs 1000. The last date for applying such admission is 30th September 2024.

The university’s decision comes in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes a multidisciplinary and flexible approach to higher education. The NEP encourages students to explore multiple fields of study and develop a broad skill set. By allowing dual degrees in regular and distance modes, DU is embracing this progressive vision, aiming to equip students with the ability to meet the demands of an ever-evolving job market.
Opportunities for Students
This policy is particularly beneficial for students who wish to gain expertise in more than one subject area. For instance, a student enrolled in a regular Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) course can now simultaneously pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) through DU’s distance education platform. This allows students to explore a diverse range of fields without extending their academic timelines significantly. The School of Open Learning (SOL), which operates under DU, will be the platform for distance education, offering students the chance to pursue courses in subjects like Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, and more.
Enhancing Employability
DU officials have emphasized that the dual degree option will significantly enhance employability, as students will have more qualifications and diverse skill sets upon graduation. In an increasingly competitive job market, this policy can provide DU graduates with a unique advantage. Many students have welcomed the change, stating that it allows them to be more adaptable in their future careers by offering multiple qualifications in a condensed time frame.
However, some educators have expressed concerns about students balancing the workload of two degrees. While distance learning offers flexibility, managing assignments, examinations, and study schedules for two different programs could be overwhelming. The university has assured students that adequate counseling and guidance will be provided to help them manage their academic responsibilities.
With this progressive step, Delhi University continues to evolve in response to the changing landscape of higher education, ensuring that students remain competitive and well-prepared for the future.
