The UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a prestigious national-level examination conducted in India to determine the eligibility of candidates for the roles of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the test evaluates candidates’ proficiency in their chosen subject and general teaching or research aptitude.
The examination is conducted twice a year, typically in June and December, in an online computer-based format. It comprises two papers: Paper 1, which tests general teaching and research aptitude, and Paper 2, which focuses on the candidate’s chosen subject from a wide array of disciplines. Both papers consist of multiple-choice questions, and there is no negative marking.
Clearing the UGC NET opens doors to prestigious academic and research opportunities. It enhances career prospects, allowing candidates to join the teaching faculty of reputed institutions or engage in advanced research with financial support under the JRF scheme.
