The examination process at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) involves assessing students on parameters such as their conceptual, critical and analytical understanding of the subject matter along with their contextual knowledge. Studying at a Distance University, students are often unaware and confused in different aspects of IGNOU exams such as examination process, evaluation system, exam day instructions and how to get better marks in exams. If you are struggling with all these, we’ve got you covered.
If you are a new student or starting at new year at IGNOU and not sure about the Examination process at the University, we can help you. The below are the few components in order of their occurrence at the University for you to understand the overall process.
When you are new at IGNOU, you will often see TEE as part of your admission status or in most of the notifications put out by the University. TEE is short for Term End Examination and TEE session refers to the academic session when you would give your exam. For example, if you took admission in July 2025, your TEE session would be TEE June 2026. Term End Examinations can either happen semester wise or annually depending upon the nature of programme you are admitted to. IGNOU conducts Term End Examinations twice in a year mainly in June and December. One special difference between a normal examination and a Term End Examination at IGNOU is the flexibility of choosing to give a certain exams in one session and rest in other sessions as opposed to normal university examinations where all exams for different subjects are supposed to be give in one go. This flexibility is available while choosing to register for exams only for subjects you need to give exam in current TEE.
Exam registration at IGNOU happens through filling an examination form and paying fees only for the subjects that you will be able to give exams in the current TEE session. The process of exam registration starts approximately three-four months before the exam dates. Students are supposed to scan through the date sheet and finalize if they are available to give exam on those dates. If a student wishes to give exam for few subjects later on, he/she is only eligible to pay fees for the subjects he/she is giving exams right away. There is an exam form and exam registration before every TEE and applicable to only that exam. We suggest you to be very careful while applying for exam form because if you are unable to sit in exams for the chosen subjects, you will declared absent from the paper and might be declared fail in those subjects. Check more details on how to register for TEE exams through Exam form here.
The University releases a tentative marksheet for all courses atleast four months in advance of TEE. The goal for releasing date sheet this early is to make that students especially those working full time can check their availability and apply for leaves to give exam. The IGNOU Date sheet consists of all the subjects along with dates and respective time slots. IGNOU conducts examination in two time slots- morning session (9AM-12 noon) and evening session (2-5PM). All the exams are only taken in either of the two sessions. The exams for all the subjects of a course (programme) is conducted in one exam center only. You might have opted for a preferable exam center at the time of filling exam form. However, your exam center can only be confirmed when the University releases your admit card or hall ticket.
According to the date sheet released by IGNOU, TEE June 2025 examination will be held from 12th June 2025 to 19th July 2025. Get more details on the Date Sheet here.
Admit Card or Hall Ticket is the official document released by the University for your entry into exams. A student is supposed to carry both his IGNOU ID as well as the Admit Card to sit for TEE exams. Admit Card is typically released 15 -30 days before the date of first exam. Find more details on the expected dates for the release of admit card for the upcoming TEE exams here. Here are more details on IGNOU Hall Ticket.
IGNOU examinations are conducted through offline mode at the designated exam centers already set by the University. Students are only supposed to write exams in pen and paper mode on the answer sheets provided by the University.
Every Term End Examination (TEE) , IGNOU releases a set of instructions for its students. Here are the recent instructions issued by the University:
You are supposed to fill in all details such as Enrollment Number, Examination Centre Code etc. You can also take help from invigilator in filling the correct information. The blocks for Enrollment Number might be longer than your number, in this case, start writing from the first block and leave the last block by putting crosses. Make sure to not make any cuttings in the front page as this might hamper with you result. Also make sure to check all signatures and stamps before submitting the answer sheet. Here is a detailed explanation on how to fill IGNOU Exam Sheet Front Page:
The University has banned all extra sheets or supplementary sheets in exams. Therefore, make sure to manage the length of your a answers within the answer sheet well enough. Do not leave any pages blank as it might shorten your space for writing answers.
During the examination, the invigilator distributes an attendance sheet in the class for everyone to sign. If you do not receive one, do not hesitate to ask as it is an important document. If absent is marked in the attendance sheet, it might impact your result.
Items such as mobile Phone, bluetooth /wireless earphones/devices, digital or smart watch, bag, handbag, papers, notes, books, car keys, electronic gadgets/ equipment , fluid etc. are not allowed inside the examination hall.
While it is generally advisable to reach early to any examination. IGNOU University has certain checking details for which they advice the students to reach the examination hall atleast 30 minutes before the start of exam. In order to deal with any last minute transportation or other delays, it is advisable that students reach at least an hour before at the exam center. The University places a list with seating arrangement for students containing roll numbers with respective exam halls at exam center. Arriving early to the center will also give you enough time to check your seating arrangements and find your respective examination hall since it keeps changing for every exam.
A very important detail when you prepare to leave for your IGNOU exam is to never forget your admit card and IGNOU ID Card. Admit Card and IGNOU ID Card is a compulsory document to carry to the examination and is used by the invigilator to verify your presence at the exam. We suggest to keep a bag constant for all your exams and put both cards in the bag and not take them out before the exams get over. Every exam day, whenever you leave from the examination hall, never forget to check if you have kept both your IDs back in your bag. We also advise you to take two copies of both admit card and IGNOU ID and keep them in your bag in order to avoid any unforeseen situations.
When you receive your question paper and answer sheet, you will see a list of instructions written on the first page. Read these instructions very carefully. These will guide you on how to fill the front page of your sheet. It will also include other details such as duration, rules and regulations for the examination. Therefore you need to read and follow these instructions carefully.
Often students are unable to manage time or complete their exams at IGNOU. One of the prominent reasons for this could be lack of planning and strategy to manage your time. We suggest you to read your questions paper for 5 minutes before starting to write your exam. In these 5 minutes, make sure to not only read the questions but also understand your marking system and weightage. Usually, theory papers will have short questions in the earlier sections and longer questions in the later sections. In order to manage your time well, make sure to answer questions that have more weightage and those that you readily know answers for. This will help you to sit later with questions that you do not know. It will also give you time to revise your paper in the last 10 minutes or to check if you have missed answering anything yet. Never spend too much time on one question, if you started already and are stuck at an answer, leave space for it and start the next one. This will give you time to come back to question later.
It is very to feel stressed, pressured or anxious before an exam. Since this can happen to anybody, there are certain ways to keep yourself calm before and during your exam. Before exam, practice any relaxation technique such as breathing exercises, meditation etc. to keep yourself anxiety free. During the exam, it is possible to not feel so good about the question paper. You might feel like you forgot everything or that you cant decide what to do first. In such situations, focus on whatever comes first and start writing. Focusing on one task at a time will release your stress and will also give you time to come back to revise your answers later. Remember, keeping calm during exam will help you write your answers better and score more marks.
Remember, if it is a subjective question, always make sure to answer with whatever knowledge that you have on the topic asked. Leaving the question will not give examiner the opportunity to give even a lowest mark. Therefore, it is always important to answer every question and to stay related to the topic asked in the question. Do not digress from the topic otherwise it is no use writing anything at all.
Your marks are directly proportional to your handwriting and presentation in exam. Make sure to write with your best handwriting in a legible and clear way. It is also important to draw any tables, graphs, charts or diagrams wherever needed. All these presentation techniques can help your score better in IGNOU exams.
In order to score well in examinations, your first step is to prepare well. Create an examination plan or strategy and follow it throughout to give your 100% for IGNOU TEE exam. Here are some tips for you:

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) follows the below evaluation process for its Term End Examinations. It is important for students to understand this process in order to score better for their exams:
Once you submit your answer sheets to the invigilator at the exam, your sheets reach trained examiners who are experts in the subjects and most likely are professors at IGNOU. These examiners mark answers on the basis of content knowledge, subject expertise , critical thinking , clarity in thoughts as well as sometimes the presentation of a student.
After evaluating answer sheets, examiners compile the scores on the basis of grading system set by University which is in the form of number of credits and alphabetical grades from A to E.
After compiling results, the allotted grades go through an internal scrutiny by the University before getting approved by authorities. This enhances transparency and accuracy within the set guidelines for evaluation in the University.
This final step involves releasing a grade card consisting breakup of assignment, practical and theory exams followed by official marksheet available for students.
